Services · BUYING FRAMEWORK

A better brief makes a better service choice.

Compare deliverables, experience, responsibilities and support before you hire or book.

A service can mean expert help, a learning experience, an installation or a booking. The details differ, but the useful starting questions are similar: what will happen, who is responsible and what have both sides agreed to? This framework helps you organise those questions.

THE IDEA TO TAKE WITH YOU

Make the outcome, the exclusions and the handover clear before comparing quotes.

STEP 01

Write down the outcome

Describe what you need in ordinary language. Include your deadline, constraints and the information the provider will need. Ask for a written description of what is included and what is outside the scope.

Questions to ask

  • What exactly will be delivered or provided?
  • What do you need to supply or arrange?
  • How will you both know the work is complete?
STEP 02

Look for experience that fits

Review examples relevant to your request. Ask who will perform the work and who will be your contact. Where the service requires professional qualifications or authorisation, verify the applicable credentials through the relevant body.

Questions to ask

  • Have they handled something similar?
  • Can you see an example or speak with a relevant reference?
  • Are there requirements specific to your location or project?
STEP 03

Compare like-for-like proposals

Put the scope, price basis and exclusions side by side. A lower headline price may cover a different amount of work. Ask how additional work is agreed and billed, and get important clarifications in writing.

Questions to ask

  • Is the price fixed, time-based or dependent on usage?
  • Which expenses, revisions or add-ons are separate?
  • What are the payment, change and cancellation terms?
STEP 04

Agree the follow-through

Clarify what happens after delivery or booking. For a project, this may include access, ownership, documentation and support. For a service or experience, it may mean the provider's contact route, rescheduling process and complaint procedure.

Questions to ask

  • What do you receive at handover?
  • Who handles a problem, and through which channel?
  • What support is included, and for how long?

BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Your decision checklist.

  • A written outcome and scope
  • Relevant examples and any required credentials
  • Comparable prices, exclusions and change terms
  • Clear responsibilities and a contact route
